Gurrero Remembered
Eddie Guerrero passes away
Nov. 13, 2005
WWE is deeply saddened by the news that Eddie Guerrero has passed away. He was found dead Sunday morning in his hotel room in Minneapolis. Eddie is survived by his wife Vickie and daughters Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.
I’m sitting at home watching the Eddie Guerrero Tribute. I should be doing the work I had taken home. My guilty pleasure has always been, and will probably always be, watching wrestling. My brother and I watched Andre the Giant beat Hulk Hogan. BJ and I cheered when Ultimate Warrior held both the Intercontinental and World Heavy Weight belts. Vicious and I ate pizza as The Radicals (Guerrero included) left WCW and joined WWF and took on Degeneration X. Both Matts (old roommates in college) rolled their eyes as Sting single handedly dismantled the Wolf Pack NWO. I had more than my fair share of arguments and debates over the legitimacy of each athlete’s skill and heart as I would show them clips of Undertaker and Mankind destroy each other in a Hell in the Cell match. I sat at Shark City as Eddie Guerrero defeated Brock Lesner to become the second Latino in WWE history to wear a heavy weight belt.
“I lie, I cheat, I steal…but at least I’m honest about it.” – Guerrero
The secret: yes, wrestling is “fake”. By “fake” I refer to the story lines and the story lines only. What’s real is heart. From what I know and what I’m hearing right now, Eddie was all heart. I won’t go on too much about Eddie, but I do have to comment on Eddie’s darkest time. There was a time when his demons were getting the best on him. He lost his job with WWE and almost lost his family when he was addicted to alcohol and prescription pain killers. Side note: for those who don’t know, steroids are not the drug of choice anymore. Getting too big and bulky can slow down one’s speed and agility. Pain killers dull the pains from sometimes daily damage. Guerrero was able walk away, refocus, overcome, get back what is important, his family, his faith, his spirit, his soul. When he came back to WWE he won back his fans and eventually the heavy weight title. Again, yes the stories and titles are fake. What’s real, WWE allows people who make the organization money to be champions. People who make money are the ones who are loved the most and cheered the loudest. And Guerrero is loved most and loudest.
